National Preservation Office | Digital Recordkeeping Initiative

Archives New Zealand collaborates with a range of national and international organisations on a number of initiatives and partnerships relating to archives. These include:

The National Preservation Office

The National Preservation Office, Te Tari Tohu Taonga, is a joint initiative of Archives New Zealand and the National Library of New Zealand. It offers free advice to institutions - including libraries, historical societies, archives, museums, community groups, iwi and hapū - on how to care for documentary heritage material, including books, photos, sound recordings and electronic formats. For example, it can advise you how to care for photos hanging in a whare nui or how to ensure a building provides the right conditions for storing heritage material.

Digital Recordkeeping Initiative

The Digital Recordkeeping Initiative has been formed to identify and promote an Australasian approach to digital recordkeeping.

The Digital Recordkeeping Initiative will address how records that are 'born digital' should be managed. The members of the Digital Recordkeeping Initiative will collaborate on the development, articulation and implementation of a common set of strategies for enabling the making, keeping and using of 'born digital' records.

This initiative will promote a single Australasian approach to digital recordkeeping across all jurisdictions and provide a space for communication and information-sharing between the members. It is intended that the collaboration will ensure the best possible strategic use of resources and maximise the wider awareness and impact of the agreed approach to addressing the challenge of digital records.

The collaborative work will include:

  • how best to support government agencies to create and manage full and accurate digital records of their decisions and activities;
  • how to ensure that digital records are preserved (either in or out of archival custody) in an authentic, reliable and useable form for as long as they are required; and
  • how to make digital records available for use after they have been preserved.

Members of the Digital Recordkeeping Initiative are: National Archives of Australia, Public Record Office Victoria, State Records New South Wales, Archives New Zealand, Queensland State Archives, Archives Office of Tasmania, State Records South Australia, State Records Office of Western Australia, Territory Records Office of the ACT, and Northern Territory Archives Service.
